One bottle, opened properly, makes the case better than we can.

Michele Braganti farms Monteraponi organically in Radda in Chianti, one of the coolest, highest corners of Chianti Classico. Il Campitello is the estate's oldest vineyard, about 420 metres up on stony schist and ringed by woodland. Mostly Sangiovese with a little Canaiolo and Colorino, it ferments with its own yeasts in concrete, rests on the skins for around 45 days, then spends two years in large old oak and is bottled without fining or filtration.

2020 was a warm year, and here it shows as depth rather than weight: dark fruit, lavender, spice and sage, held together by firm, fine tannins. Antonio Galloni of Vinous called it “one of the very finest wines I have tasted at Monteraponi.”

Open it an hour or two ahead and serve at 18°C in a large glass. Our pick: bistecca or a slow-roasted shoulder of lamb with rosemary.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0071/8615/3508/files/Bottle-of-Monteraponi-Chianti-Classico-Riserva-Il-Campitello-2020-Red-Wine-Flatiron-SF.jpg?v=1791665561
